President of the Community Council opened the meeting by welcoming everyone, after which all of the Officers and Board members introduced themselves to the community residents. Mr. Shea informed everyone about the upcoming Board elections that will take place in April of 2013. This will be the last year for Jerry as President; anyone that is interested in running for the board and is interested in the elections is welcome. The elections are open to everyone who has been present in the last three consecutive meetings.
Deputy Inspector Capelmann updated everyone on the statistics of 9th Precinct for the last 30 days. He spoke about a few incidents that had taken place in the past few weeks. The most recent one that took place this past weekend, when a young woman that was out on the town with her friends around 2am Saturday February 16th, 2013 stumbled into a building at 125 E 12th Street where the super called for an ambulance. She was taken to Beth Israel hospital where she expired. Later on it was found out that she did have medical problems.
Another incident that Deputy Capelmann spoke about was a shooting that took place at a Seven-Eleven FDR Drive, Wednesday January 30th at 1:30 AM. The person that was targeted had also a prior record. All four involved were captured within 24 hours.
There were 8 robberies in the last 28 days that involved I-phone robberies. Six out of eight were solved. One of the robberies took place at TompkinsSquarePark where a person was apprehended and another one at 104 4th Ave. where two people that were caught were from Brooklyn.
Deputy inspector spoke about stolen property. Mainly computers that were stolen out of the local schools. In that case 3 people were arrested.
There were 3 burglaries that took place. One of them on 5th, one on 6th and one on 7th Streets. In all of the cases perpetrators got in through open windows. Also, the biggest problem in our area is Grand Larceny’s that take place in our local bars. Most of the people leave their property unattended.
Grand Larcenies, for the last 28 days were up 20%.
Three victims had their cell phones taken. We all need to be more aware of our surroundings when talking on our telephones. A 15 year old kid from the Bronx was arrested for 5 robberies within 7 weeks involving cell phones. In two cases a person had a cell phone snatched when talking on the phone by a perpetrator on a bike.
Detective Hernandez gave some important tips and pointers that one can take in order protect their I-Phones. Callers ID bracelet that will let you know when you moved too far away from your phone by going off. A free APP called NYPD is available, and a 311 APP where pictures can be taken and sent directly to 311.
After that the community questions and concerns were addressed. The first speaker was Rev. Richard Del Rio who is a Pastor of Abounding Grace Church. He worked closely with the 9th Precinct during Hurricane Sandy helping our community. Rev. Del Rio is now running for City Council and wanted to introduce himself to the community.
Ashley Kile from Project Hope introduced herself to everyone. She briefly spoke about how her agency helps victims of Hurricane Sandy recover by providing different services within the community.
Mauricio Pazmino from Senators Squadron’s office. Spoke about gun control and the new bill that was passed in January. He informed everyone about the upcoming Public safety and quality of Life issues meeting that will take place at BMCC on April 28th, 2013. Updates will be given on the next meetings
District Manager of Community Board 3, Ms. Stetzer who spoke about Mr. Kutcher who purchased several properties in the community and about the SLA meeting that will be held at the new location which is 189 Allen Street in March. Discussion will include the New Housing Authority up coming project that involve our community.
Please be advised nomination for Precinct Community Council Board members are coming up, during our next meeting in March 19, 2013 information will be given out and Nominations will start a, member in good standing of the Precinct Council shall be one who has attended three (3) or more regular meetings in the twelve month including and prior to current meeting for eligibility to cast a vote.
